Antiquing & Soda Fountains, Mother’s Day & back yard revamps, and PANSIES!

I read a few blogs that sometimes write about several things in one post.  I usually try to break them down by subject...and do one post at a time, but then lots of times things get forgotten about so I thought I'd give this a try :)  I had a few random things I wanted to share with you…and I thought they would all fit in one post!

A couple Saturdays ago, we took off on a Linoski adventure to Lebanon, IL. We just so happened to happen upon their Spring Festival so the streets were busy with sidewalk sales and hanging baskets and everything in between!  Our day was complete with some antique shopping, street vendor browsing, lunch at a working soda fountain and delicious apple crisp dessert.  It was a wonderful afternoon with beautiful weather and fun memories!  Steff posted some pics here. (She's one of the blogs I mentioned above that does multiple items in a post which I love!)  Below are a few of the photos I took as well.  I really need to be better about pulling my camera out more.  I took it and got some shots, but I realize I get into the moment of whatever I’m doing and don’t step back to take photos!  It’s a MUST change about my photo taking habits!

We celebrated Mother’s Day this year with some planting and time spent in our yard outside!  It was a beautiful day and I spent it just how I wanted…with the two amazing men in my life :) Here are some photos of us picking up a shrub that we got for Grandma PJ for Mother's Day.  She just so happened to point it out the day before, so I knew exactly what to get her this year!  Thanks Mom!

On Mother's Day I mentioned to Jer that I had my brain working on a project to dress up a bare spot in our yard…and part of my Mother’s included the purchases to make that happen!!  Here’s a pic of the space in all its glory. I love how much of a difference a couple chairs, a whiskey barrel with some plants and a couple throw pillows can make!  My husband is responsible for the mini chair you see there. He found them for $6 at Dollar General one day...and when I showed him the chairs I wanted at Target, he knew these mini-versions were a perfect fit.  Owen's little tushy fits into it perfectly!!

So this year I finally got pansies to grow past May!!  I dare say they may still be around come Memorial Day and early June.  For me this is unusual. I'm guessing it's our cooler, rainy weather!  But I am loving how tall and full they've gotten. This is 2 six-packs of a jumbo variety.  I planted them just before Owen's birthday...and they are fuller and healthier than ever!

Thankful Thursdays

It's been awhile since I’ve posted one.  But it’s a tradition I try to go back to…even after an absence!  So without further ado:  Some of these span the last few weeks…but re-reading them helps remind me of all the wonderful that life is filled with!!

That Macy’s now carries Motherhood Maternity clothes. There is a little less selection, but it’s cheaper and in my opinion, it’s all the super cute stuff they carry in the store!
Feeling Baby Boy move more and more each day J This morning I’m pretty sure he stuck his little tushy out and wasn’t budging until I gave him a few rubs and settled him back down!  I love having my little buddy bump and nudge me all day long!  One of my favorite parts of pregnancy!!
My son’s beautiful little spirit of curiosity and adventure!  He makes me laugh...every single day!
Getting out of town for a quick overnight.
Spending a few uninterrupted hours in the car with my hubby
That he completed his PE Exam
That he asked me to join him…which basically meant a day of shopping and relaxing for me!!
That Saturday morning when Owen got up…he flew into our bedroom first thing after Jer got him out of his crib…climbed into bed with me, wrapped his arms around my shoulders and laid there with me. This went on for 5 minutes at least.  And then when he drank his milk…he laid there with me as well.  Melted my heart!
That I got to spend Saturday being lazy with Jer and Owen.
Taking Owen to the park
I didn’t get pictures…but will never forget seeing Owen’s eyes light up at the HUGE puddles of mulch and mud at the park!

Taking the Monday off after our travels to recoup
That work has gotten back to normal!
Spending a Saturday in Lebanon on a Linoski Adventure.  What a fun day!
Planning the boys bedroom so it can be a functional shared space. I’m not always sure that moving wasn’t a better option…however, I’m blessed to have a hubby who is as organized as I am about life in our house…so making it a working space for both Cooper and Owen is important!
Day dreaming about our play room we’re going to put together for Owen and Cooper upstairs!  We’re totally revamping our loft space with lots of fun stuff for the boys!  I can’t wait to share pictures and stories!!
A most wonderful Mother’s Day spent relaxing, doing yard work and hanging out with my boys.
After our awesome day of yard work and playing outside, Owen needed his toes scrubbed to get all the dirt out and his crocs are still sitting by our porch door waiting to be cleaned off from all the mud!
An impromptu Monday spent at home…Owen and I stayed in our PJ’s all day!!

And we shall call him…

Cooper!!

I was hesitant to pick too early or share too early…but this Sunday marked week 28 for he and I.  So I figure it’s time we let the cat out of the bag!!

Cooper is an English name and it loosely means – Barrel Maker. For a little more on this you can check out this Wikipedia link. Apparently a "cooper" by trade does more than just make barrels...they do lots of other types of things related to it as well.

This meaning is not why we like the name. It actually had nothing to do with the choice.  But in choosing it, we of course wanted to learn about its origin and meaning!! I think what I've learned so far, means coopers were creative and hardworking.  And depending on the type of barrels they made...may have had some fun on the job too ;)

Anyway, we like the name for the possibilities that it can bring. It also just rolls off our tongues well. And I think it fits right along with Owen when I imagine myself yelling for our crazy children to come inside after playing all day in the backyard!!

The middle name is still to come…so stay tuned!

So that's that!  In that first week of August, we will be introducing/unleashing Cooper to the world!

We can’t wait to meet you buddy!!!

The Weather Forecast...

That's it.  They finally got the forecast right.  They are calling for rain...and when asked how long we could expect it to rain...this was the following response:

Forever!!

All kidding aside...on our trip home a few weekends ago...this scene came to mind as we drove through yet ANOTHER torrential downpour!  This spring seems to have brought so many!!  Maybe Jer and I had been breathing too much of the same air all weekend long, but we got quite a kick out of ourselves! Luckily the rain seems to have taken a chill pill, but this weekend brought us another pattern of wet, cloudy weather like we have had so much of this spring.

***As an aside, I know some blogs do prizes for the first person to name that movie...but I am not really in a position to give away prizes.  However, I'd love to know if anyone out there knows!  I will give away that while I love me a good girlie romance, I'm also a sucker for awesome movies that might be more in the male genre of films!  So anyone...name that movie??!!?!***

28 Week Checkup!!

Yes sir...that's right!  Week 28.  I will officially be 28 weeks tomorrow.  But for all intents and purposes, yesterday was my 28 Week Checkup!!  What did this appointment include?  Well, it started off with a glucose test...which means I have to drink glucola (with Owen I had orange, this time I drank a cherry flavored one. I personally think it tasted like chewing on a cherry popsicle stick which honestly was kinda gross) Anyway, you have to drink the glucola in a few minutes and then wait an hour!  Dr. Talsky was running late from a c-section that morning, so an hour later I was sitting in an exam room waiting on him. The lab called over and had the office send me back to draw my blood.  Regardless, I got that taken care of and not long after I got back to the room to continue waiting, we got down to the business of my appointment.

I was told that I am doing wonderfully!  My weight is on target.  My blood pressure is good. Baby Boy's heart-rate was fluctuating between 140 and 150.  I am also measuring about a week or so ahead of the game, but Dr. Talsky said that was due to us having another big baby!  The crazy part is I go back June 3rd.  He wanted to see me in 3 weeks instead of 4.  That simply means we are getting very close!

By the next time we go, I'll be nearing 31 weeks and I'm hoping we get to do a 3D ultrasound and also schedule our c-section date...better known as Baby Boy's birthdate!!

Speaking of getting close, we currently have a few things cooking around the house to get ready for his arrival!  Owen's room is "under construction" as we have had his twin bunk beds delivered. We have bedding picked out online and need to place our order and get to painting and making changes! I'm really excited to share our theme and before and after photos once it's all finished up!  We also have some plans in the works for a fun play area in our loft upstairs.  I'm seeing chalkboard/magnet paint on our TV cabinet, big colorful floor pillows, a kids table and chairs, some low level shelving for toys and some other fun touches.  We have a lot of work ahead of ourselves, but I also think we have a lot of fun ahead of us as well!!

One of my other goals before Baby Boy comes is to do some freezer meals. I'm hoping to utilize Owen's  nap time on some Fridays in June/July to bake us up a couple lasagnas and few other things that freeze up well.  I think this will help us keep our dinners in order while we're figuring out how to be parents to a 2 and a half year old and a newborn baby!!

Stay tuned for MUCH overdue belly shots coming soon. I'm also going to reveal our name choice for little mister, and a few more updates on what we've got cooking around Casa de Linley :)

2 Year Checkup!

On March 31, we took Owen into the doctor. It was for his 2 year checkup!!

I am happy to report that he is doing extremely well.  He is healthy.  His weight and height are still in the 90th percentile…but all of it is proportioned just right so that is great news!

He weighs in at 33 pounds and is 36 inches tall!  He’s certainly our big boy :)

At this appointment we discussed lots and lots of things about Owen.  We got great advice on his picky eating habits and a few other tips!  We also discussed his lack of verbal communication.  Owen communicates…but most of the time it’s non-verbal. He also understands what you say to him and follows instruction. He has words, but he does not put 2 sentence words together and sometimes when he does attempt to say things…they sound nothing like what they really are. It’s also strange because sometimes, words are clear as day as well.

So on April 19th, we take Owen to get a hearing test.  Our doctor wanted us to have that tested first before we begin any kind of speech therapy.  Basically if there is a hearing issue, we will see an Ear Specialist. If it is a speech deficit then we will begin therapy.  So…everyone please send up a few prayers that we find the right answer with this for Owen!  Jer and I are excited to get him talking and to be able to learn some tools to help him get more and more of his expressive language skills up to speed with his age!!

We are also blessed to have a happy, healthy little man who lights up our world!!  I can’t wait to see what his second year of life has in store for us!

***Hearing Test Results!
As an update to the above post…we took Owen for his hearing evaluation.  This test was actually really easy and the lady who did it was awesome!  I am also happy to report he got a clean bill of health for hearing.  All good on that front.

What does that mean for us now??  We have a referral to Early Intervention.  Owen will have someone come and do a speech and language evaluation on him to see exactly what is going on with his speech development.  I currently have a call into the Child and Family Connections number to get this appointment set up.  I’m nervous, but also very motivated to get Owen talking more!  So I hope this helps us all communicate in a little bit better manner and cut down on some of Owen’s frustrations with things he’s trying to communicate!!

Also in the past several weeks, Owen's speech seems to have really began to come together.  He's not what you would classify as normal for his age, but he's making big strides!  This makes my heart so happy for him!

Prayers for us as we embark down this unknown road. It's sure to be an adventure!

2nd birthdays….the flu virus and a springtime snow!

So I am whole-heartedly 100% disappointed at myself for being so behind on blogging.  Work has been crazy and I find it hard to motivate myself to get on the computer after leaving the office. I also have a toddler to contend with and a 26 (nearly 27) week pregnant body that feels great most of the time…but is also completely worn out at the end of a week! We also had a few other things pop up in our otherwise normal routine…and so that being said, blogging has fallen off my plate of things to do during the day. Regardless…I promised myself I’d get caught back up. So…I’m catching up starting around Owen’s birthday!  I hope you enjoy the catch up over the next few days…and the other things I’ve got rolling around to share!  Thanks, as always for reading!

The Thursday night before Owen’s 2nd birthday, he woke up at 1am screaming. I went to check on him and found him covered in throw up and burning up with a fever.  I will spare you the rest of the details because that is pretty much the long and short of how Owen’s party got cancelled!  We spent Friday eating crackers, drinking juice and trying to make sure we didn’t have a recurrence of the throwing up!  Luckily Jer had taken that Friday off to get things ready for Owen’s party…so we were able to be together as a family. His fever really never did get much better and we decided to still decorate the house, order him balloons and such…but we would nix the party with 20 people at our house.  I was afraid that A) guests might get the germs and B) it would get him a little too wound up and we would end up with a screaming baby at 2am.  While we ended up with a screaming baby at 2am anyway, we didn’t let that stop us from having a similar version of his 2 year celebration we had planned.  I finished the picture frames and birthday banner that I had in mind and also let everyone know if they wanted to stop by and see Owen on his big day that would be great.  And honestly the way it worked out was pretty perfect for him!  Owen had a smattering of visitors throughout the day. He got wonderful hugs and presents and the day was so special.  We also got a little springtime snowfall that Saturday afternoon. And from the cozy warmth of our living room we watched the snow come falling down on my freshly planted pansies!  Though the party was not quite the shindig we had planned, at least this year it happened on a year when he didn’t’ understand that we had to cancel.  Momma and Dadda were more disappointed that he was!  So even though we were battling the flu bug...I also got to spend some wonderful quality time with my husband and son.  We got to see our family all day long and watch Owen open fun presents throughout the day and enjoy getting loving from everyone important in his life!!  We ate some delicious birthday cake and watched some wonderful movies to cap off our evening.

Oh and an update on the flu?  He ran a fever through Monday morning.  This then led us to the doctor’s office.  He was subjected to another chest x-ray. Luckily this time…it was just a virus and nothing else!!  By Monday night the fever seemed to disappear just as quickly as it had come.

I truly think that God knows what he’s doing after all!!  B/c a weekend in wasn’t such a bad plan for the Linley 4 after all!  Thank you God for unexpected blessings.

So here’s some photos of presents and the fun Owen-inspired touches that we put together for his big second birthday!!!  It was a great day truly worthy of remembering always :)

C. Virginia Linley

This past weekend we packed up and headed to Walnut.  Unfortunately it wasn't for our usual traditional crazy Linley weekend.  This time it was to mourn and celebrate the loss of Grandma Linley.  After a weekend of bittersweet time together with our family, we said goodbye with an ache in our hearts to a wonderful Grandmother who left an amazing legacy of love and family values behind her.  But...instead of talking too much more myself I just thought I would share the eulogy my husband wrote for her.  I am so proud of him and he did an amazing job.  This sums up why we are all so sad to see her leave us...but thankful for the time we had with her.  Love you Jer.  I think your Grandma would be so very proud of you.

Eulogy for Charlotte Virginia Linley (Grandma):

Growing up, I always admired how hard my grandparents worked for everything they had, and the nice things that they had as a result.  One day I remember telling my Grandma how “I really want to have a nice car like this one day.”  Grandma looked at me and said, “Well one day, if you work really hard, you will be able to have a nice car like this too.”  When I asked my Grandma what she did for work, she joked and said, “Well…I am married to Grandpa.”  My Grandma always had a pretty great sense of humor.  But all joking aside, there are no two harder working people than my Grandma and Grandpa Linley.  And this was just the first of many lessons that my Grandma Linley taught me.

Good Morning Everyone, I want to start by thanking you all for being here today to show your love and respect for my grandmother, as well as your support for my family during this time.  As you all know, Charlotte Virginia Linley played many roles in this life.  She was a daughter, a sister, a wife, a mother, an aunt, a cousin, a grandmother, a great grandmother, and many other things.  Yet most importantly, she was a good friend to us all.  Most of you know her as Virginia.  But for me, she just went by Grandma.  And I’d like to share with you today a little bit about who she was to my family and me.
Loving
When I think of my grandma, there are many words that I could use that best describe her and the joy she brought to all of us.  First and foremost, she was a loving person.  She was gentle, kind, and always nurturing.  When I was younger, my dad often joked that growing up with Grandma was a lot like living with “June Clever.”  I guess in saying that, it means that he thought of himself and my Uncle Mark as sort of like Wally and the Beav.  And I will let you argue over who’s who.  But I think what he meant from that is that she was a mom’s mom, or a trophy mom as he would say.  He said she was usually in the kitchen or tending to the household chores, yet somehow always had an eye out the window looking out for her boys, as well as the other children in the neighborhood.  Much like June Clever, I believe her style of loving and mothering really personified that time or era.  And she continued to teach and raise us grandchildren in much that same style.
Classy
My Grandma was also a very Classy Lady.  Whether it was being adorned in her beautiful jewelry, having her hair and make-up perfectly done up, or dressing as fashionable as she did, she always looked the part.  I especially recall thinking this during family functions like weddings or holidays with her dressed in a beautiful, colorful outfit just for the occasion, or even cruising in her prized Mustang in the town parade wearing her hip J-Lo sunglasses and scarf.  My grandma always looked like a movie star, and she always will be in my book.
Young at Heart
Grandma was also young at heart.  It was hard to keep in her one place, or have her sit back and let someone else do something for her.  As kids, we often joked that she never slept.  When we would visit, she was awake when we went to bed, and awake when we got up, with breakfast ready on the table or waiting to take our order of cheesy-eggs and bacon.  But really, who could blame her, having to keep up with seven grandchildren, and even two great grandchildren.  Whether it was playing multiple rounds of golf with us when we visited for the week, or staying up late playing games at the kitchen table, grandma never skipped a beat.  In fact, when we were younger and would ask how old my grandma was, she would always reply that she was only 17.  However, as the years went on and her age did not, we started to get the idea that she had fudged that number just a little bit.  To this day, I still don’t believe we ever got an accurate number from her on that subject.  But I think that is because in her heart, she always felt a little younger than she really was.
Caring
Caring is also a word that greatly describes my grandma.  One of the ways she showed how much she cared was by always making her house feel like home, regardless of the guest or time of day that you were there.  This was especially true when it came to dining with her guests.  As I hope most of you have experienced, my grandma was an exceptional cook.  And when it came to dining at the Linley House, my Grandma was most definitely the hostess with the mostest.  At family dinners during the holidays, I don’t think my Grandma ever ate a full meal.  She would usually be in the kitchen making sure everyone had everything they needed before she would even consider sitting down at the table.  And when she would finally sit down, she’d notice someone who was done with their dinner, and up she was again bringing out the many choices of desserts there always were to offer.
Cookies and Secret Recipe
And when it comes to desserts, there is nothing that beats my Grandma’s homemade chocolate chip cookies.  They were the kind of cookies that one would crave, especially after a 4-hour long trip to visit with Grandma and Grandpa.  No matter the time we got into town, there was always a fresh batch made either sitting on the kitchen table or in the snack drawer with a note from grandma telling us to make ourselves at home.  And of course, we had to have some as soon as we got in the door, whether it was 10, 12 or 2 in the morning.  It was sort of a tradition, I suppose.  And we would always joke how the cookies were so good, that they must be some sort of family secret recipe that none of us were privy to just yet.  It was only a couple years ago that Grandma had let the cat out of the bag, and revealed it was just a cut out recipe she found one day and taped to the inside her cabinet.  Since then a couple of us have tried to recreate her cookies, but always falling just short of the magic that came with Grandma’s cookies.
Strong
My Grandma was also strong, both physically and mentally.  For those of you who did not know, she was diagnosed with a form of Leukemia several years back.  Though you never would have guessed it if you were around her.  She always went along like things were good, and she was blessed in every aspect of her life.  And whether it was traveling with my Grandpa, keeping up with her many hobbies, or visiting with us grandkids, she never tried to let things hold her back.  And when things were not going well for others close to her, she always made sure that she put them before she put herself, providing words of encouragement and a positive attitude to help motivate them through their struggles and pain.
Passionate
And my grandma was passionate about everything that she worked at, as well.  If it was working at the chiropractic office, raising her family, teaching and sharing with her grandchildren, or volunteering her time at church and in the community, she always put her heart and soul in all that she did.  And I think that really showed by how much everyone respected, treated, and cared for her in return.  When I was younger, we always joked that everyone in town knew grandma and grandpa, and this seemed especially true driving around town with her as a kid.  Where we were from, everyone didn’t know each other every place that you went, and we always thought it was a little weird. But now being a little older, I realize she was known because she was involved.  Involved in the community, in the schools, at church, and in life.
Hobbies
Grandma also had her fair share of hobbies to keep her life full and fun.  For leisure, she often joined her quilting club to work on the plethora of projects she always had going on, one of which we proudly treasure at home given as a gift for our wedding.  She also mutually enjoyed golfing, partaking in both league and tournament play during her fabulous career, with even a tournament title or two to her name.  And that was one of things I remember most about Grandma was golfing together.  My brother and I sort of feel like we learned to golf with Grandma, and treasure that experience with her, when it was just the two of us and Grandma while Grandpa was at work or before he joined us.  And it was not until recent years that we were even good enough to beat her, and even then it was not always constant.  Grandma also enjoyed volunteering her time at church, working with the multiple groups and activities, as well as playing the organ and singing in the choir.  Her musical talents were truly a gift to be shared, and something she enjoyed to do.

I would also like to take sometime today, to say thank you to a few special people.
Our Family – Thank you for sharing in this life with Grandma, and for giving her so much to talk about and be proud of.
Bob Linley, my Grandpa – Thank you for giving Grandma a wonderful life, taking care of her so well, and giving her so much to live for.  You and Grandma are the pillars of this family, and the mentors of a lifetime.
And Finally to most of all…I want to say thank you to my Grandma.  For teaching me how to golf.  Teaching me about working hard.  And mostly teaching me about kindness and the importance of loving your family with all your heart.

Earlier I mentioned that my Grandma was devoted to her church. She was a wonderful Christian example for me growing up, both in the way she lived her life and treated others.  Some of my first church memories involve coming to this church with my grandparents, watching my Grandma play the organ and my Grandpa sing in the choir.  So I thought it would be most appropriate to close with an excerpt from a contemporary mash-up of a traditional hymn:
Amazing Grace, My Chains Are Gone
Amazing grace how sweet the sound
That saved a wretch like me
I once was lost, but now I'm found
Was blind, but now I see

'Twas grace that taught my heart to fear
And grace my fears relieved
How precious did that grace appear
The hour I first believed

My chains are gone, I've been set free
My God, my Savior has ransomed me
And like a flood His mercy reigns
Unending love, amazing grace

The Lord has promised good to you
His word our hope secures
He will our shield and portion true
As long as life endures

Yea, when your flesh and heart shall fail,

And mortal life shall cease,

You shall possess within the veil,
A life of joy and peace.

Your chains are gone, You’ve been set free
Our God, our Savior has ransomed thee
And like a flood His mercy reigns
Unending love, amazing grace

We love you grandma, and we’ll miss you.
